Iontophoresis means a method of treatment to drive a substance having a positive or negative charge into or through tissue/skin. Thus, iontophoresis can be used for dermal and transdermal delivery of a substance.

In iontophoresis, two electrodes are placed in contact with the tissue/skin. One electrode is conveniently a pad of absorbent material soaked with the composition to be administered and a voltage is applied between the two electrodes.

Some people feel a slight tingling sensation during the procedure, but the electrical current isn’t strong enough to shock you.
Iontophoresis doesn’t require any special or advanced preparation. However, make sure to tell your doctor if you:
